The Two Toms
In October our Two Toms will both be taking on physical challenges to raise money for the CCSS. Tom North, our North West Coordinator, will be completing the Manchester marathon on October 10th. Tom Firmin, a grandson of our Founder Trustee Roey Burden, will be completing an Ironman Challenge on October 23rd in Portugal. Read below why the Two Tom have decided to take on these challenges and how you can sponsor them.
Tom has been inspired to run the Ironman by his Grandma and our Founder Trustees Roey Burden. Below Tom explains more about the challenge.
‘She set up the charity in response to a family tragedy, after discovering first-hand the lack of pastoral care that is given to the families of the deceased and others during inquests at a coroner’s court. Unfortunately, despite my grandma’s dedication and the many thousands of lives they touch each year, the charity doesn’t receive any government funding and relies on donations to survive.
This got me thinking. What’s the single hardest thing I can do, in order to raise as much money as possible? An Ironman. For those not familiar with what that entails, it’s a 3.8km swim, a 180km bike and a marathon (42.2km) at the end of all that! On average, that takes competitors 13hrs. In other words, from when the sun rises until it sets, I’ll be exercising. So for the last 18 months, I’ve been training 6 days a week, building up to the grand event which is now frighteningly close – IRONMAN Portugal.
Now, 4 weeks out, I’m more confident about making the starting line and so I turn to you to ask for your help in meeting my fundraising goal! It’s not a cause I expect many of you will be familiar with. In the event the charity doesn’t do it for you, perhaps the idea of a grandson doing 12hrs of gruelling exercise out of love for his grandma will… 🙂
Thank you for your support’

Read below to find out why our staff member Tom North is running a marathon for the CCSS.
‘I started working for the CCSS in April 2019. As part of my role I have to attend inquests regularly. I have seen first hand what a difficult experience it can be for everyone attending an inquest. Our volunteers are fantastic and give up their free time to support people at inquests every day. Without our volunteers we would not have a service and they are my inspiration to run this marathon.
The money I raise will help recruit and train more volunteers to deliver our vital service. We receive lovely feedback from families, witnesses and others who have received our support at Court. It is very rewarding to receive such feedback but it also outlines just how important the service is.
Due to the Covid Pandemic I am now running the Manchester Marathon on 10th October 2021. It was originally scheduled for April 2020 so it feels like it has been a long time coming. I am into my last part of my training and looking forward to getting on the start line. Thank you for all the donations. Every penny will go to supporting those attending inquests’
